Enedis, Tata Power DDL and European partners team up to build an Indian smart grid demonstrator. Part of IElectrix project, a European H2020 initiative, to test-case a local energy community in Delhi.

Enedis, Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited, Schneider Electric, Odit-e and VaasaETT have signed an agreement on March 15th, 2019 during the India Smart Utility Week 2019 to implement a Smart Grid Demonstrator within the framework of the European project IElectrix.

IElectrix project is the answer to a European Horizon 2020 call for projects named “Integrated Energy Energy Systems - Energy Islands” ; it aims at preparing the implementation of the Local Energy Communities as set out in new European legislation.

It brings together 15 partners from 8 European countries (Distribution System Operator, industrial and research centers) and Tata Power DDL as the DSO partner from India, coordinated by French DSO Enedis and comprising five demonstrators in India, Germany, Austria and Hungary.

Enedis and Tata Power DDL have joined with Schneider Electric, Odit-e and VaasaETT as IT-based, innovative product and solution providers to demonstrate the combined roles of innovative functionalities serving the distribution network in the North area of Delhi.

The IElectrix Indian Smart Grid Demonstrator will implement the three following use cases on dedicated sections of Tata Power DDL distribution network:

  • Maximise local consumption of Renewable Energy Sources generation.
  • Boost the consumption of local energy with an adapted Demand Side Management.
  • Improve the resilience of the local energy system thanks to the islanding capability of the microgrid in case of an outage occurring within the area.

The duration of the project is 3 years and a half, with a start planned for early May 2019 and a closure in October 2022. The overall project budget is 10.7 M€ with a grant from the European Commission of 7.9 M€.

The signature of this agreement is therefore a decisive step, and a strong symbol of the specificity of this European project based on international cooperation with Tata Power Delhi Distribution Limited and the realization of a smart grid demonstrator in India.
